geographic and algebraic books (1912-1916)
Books 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14
While From the Cradle to the Grave recreates the past (that is, childhood), the Geographic and Algebraic Books invent the future. Wölfli explains to his nephew Rudolf how he is to carry out the “St. Adolf Giant Creation” after Wölfli’s death. Thanks to the “St. Adolf Capital Fortune”, the entire globe is to be bought up, urbanised and modernised from pole to pole. Parallel to this, a renaming is to take place: Switzerland is to become “St. Adolf Wood”, the ocean “St. Adolf Ocean” and Africa “St. Adolf South” and so forth.
After successfully taking over the earth, on board the “Giant-Travel-Transparent” the universe is to be travelled, inventoried, renamed and taken possession of. As conventional numbers can no longer deal with the gigantic dimensions of his mental world, Wölfli expands the numerical system. After quadrillion now follow regonif, suniff, unitif, vidoniss, weratif, xylottif and so on. The new highest number is “anger”.
The “St. Adolf Capital Fortune grows hand in hand with the spatial expansion. Taking the form of “Fortune Capital Interest Rates”, the endlessly growing wealth is calculated, administered and added to until far beyond the year 2000. Together with the number pictures, the musical score pictures symbolise the power, scope and beauty of the Wölfli world creation. The genesis of the “St. Adolf Giant Creation” reached its peak on the 23rd July, 1916, in Wölfli’s self-appointment as “St. Adolf II”.
