funeral march (1928-1930)
(1928–1930)
16 unnumbered books
The 16 books of what might be called Wölfli’s personal requiem contain more than 8,000 pages of texts and collages. Here, narration is almost entirely replaced by sound and rhythm to take the form of abstract phonetic poems. In them, Wölfli combines key words from his universe with the word “Wiiga“ (cradle in his dialect) to create a spellbinding, potentially endless mantra. The Funeral March, the fifth part of his writings, ends unfinished at Wölfli’s death in 1930. |
